On October 31, 2004, the fourth bilingual speech contest for Beijing middle school students was concluded. The contest involved students delivering speeches based on the theme: “My Participation in the Green Olympics.” Pursuant to the ideal of the “Green Olympics,” the intention of the contest was to publicise and promote the concept of environmental protection among middle school students.
Ever since the Beijing’s successful bid in 2001 for the 2008 Olympiad, the English and Chinese bilingual contest has been held annually. This year, the campaign focused on the subject - “A Blue Sky for Beijing.” The campaign was launched by the Beijing Environmental Protection Foundation and other work units. A total of 8000 students from 89 middle schools in 14 counties took part in the contest, with 15 entering the final.
