IOC holds Debriefing of Athens 2004 in Beijing (photo attached)


  The IOC held a meeting in Beijing on Oct. 31, 2004 to review the Athens Olympic Games. The meeting attracted such high-profile figures as IOC President Jacques Rogge, BOCOG President Liu Qi, Director of China’s General Administration of Sport Yuan Weimin, BOCOG Executive President Wang Qishan and President of China Disabled People’s Federation (CDPF) Deng Pufang.

  In his speech at the meeting, Liu Qi said the Athens Olympic Games has left a wonderful impression on the mind of people from around the world. Expressing welcome on behalf of the 13 million Beijing citizens to Rogge and other guests from Athens, Turin, Vancouver and the bidding cities for the 2012 Olympic Games, Liu said the meeting provided a precious opportunity for Beijing to learn from the successful experience of the Athens Olympic Games. He also congratulated the Greek government, the Greek people and ATHOC President Mrs. Gianna Angelopoulos Daskalaki for the success of the Athens Olympic Games.

  Liu said the success of Athens 2004 has added impetus to Beijing in its preparation for the 2008 Games. He said Beijing will be open minded and learn from the experiences of the host cities of previous Olympic Games in a bid to make greater contribution to the Olympic Movement.

  Liu said over the past three years, Beijing has made substantial progress in the preparation for the Olympic Games and laid a solid foundation for the preparatory work in the next four years. The 3rd Meeting of the IOC Coordination Commission, which was held in Beijing last week, had made fully positive assessment of Beijing’s preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games. Liu expressed the confidence that BOCOG is to stage a high-standard Olympic Games.

  Rogge said the Athen Olympic Games was successful and satisfactory to athletes, various national and regional Olympic committees and all sport federations. He said people should learn from the successful experience of Athens and explore how to stage better Olympic Games. He said besides learning from Athens, people should draw lessons from all previous Olympic Games so as not to make the same mistakes.”

  Among other personages speaking at the meeting are Mrs. Gianna Angelopoulos Daskalaki, President of the IOC Coordination Commission for the 2004 Games Denis Oswald, ATHOC Chief Executive Officer Marton Simitsek and President of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Hein Verbruggen. Olympic Games Executive Director Gilbert Felli presided over the meeting.

  In their review of the Athens Olympic Games, the attendants focused on such issues as the Olympics logo and its prospect, utilization of core resources, planning and progress of venue construction, competitions, schedule of the Games and the Paralympic Games.

  A total of about 400 people attended the meeting, including BOCOG Executive Vice-President Liu Jingmin, IOC members, officials from the Athens 2004 Organizing Committee (ATHOC), the Turin Organizing Committee for the XX Olympic Winter Games (TOROC), the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) and representatives from the bidding cities for the 2012 Olympic Games.
