Li Binghua addresses the opening ceremony

  On September 14, 2004, BOCOG and the Beijing Municipal Environment Protection Bureau jointly held the "Beijing 2004 International Environment Seminar" in Beijing New Century Hotel. BOCOG Vice-President Li Binghua said at opening ceremony that BOCOG has made active efforts to fulfill its commitment on environment protection during the process hosting the Olympics.

  BOCOG's Effort

  Li said in order to carry through the concept “Green Olympics, High-tech Olympics and People’s Olympics", BOCOG has taken into consideration the prominence of protecting environment, natural resources and ecological balance, so as to minimize the impact of construction and marketing projects on the environment. Meanwhile, Li said BOCOG is also encouraging the development of environment-friendly technology and campaigning for pollution-free consumerism. He said BOCOG has joined hands with the municipal government to draft and implement environment protection measures according to the Olympic Action Agenda.

  International Experience

  IOC environmental protection expert Ou Minghao, officials from the Italian Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Protection Agency of the United States and environmental experts from Sydney, Athens and Turin took part in the seminar. Li said BOCOG will adopt available experience worldwide and welcome international experts to supervise their work.

  Theme on Improving Environment

  The seminar focused on the theme of "improving Beijing's urban environment, preparing for a Green Olympics, and promoting sustainable development of both urban and rural areas." Environmental experts attending the seminar discussed the issues of environmental protection and sustainable development in large cities.
