On the morning of November 1,2004, Beijing officially launched its Olympic Media Center at Huabei Hotel in northern part of the city to facilitate report about the Beijing Olympic Games by both Chinese and international media.
Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee Li Dongsheng, Vice-Director of the State Council Information Office Wang Guoqing, Deputy Secretary of the Beijing Municipal CPC Committee Long Xinmin and Vice-President of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Richard Kevan Gosper jointly unveiled the plaque of the Media Centre. Head of the Publicity Department of the Beijing Municipal CPC Committee Cai Fuchao presided over the opening ceremony.
BOCOG Vice President Jiang Xiaoyu said at the opening ceremony that extensive participation and support of the media are indispensable for the success of the Olympic Games. Beijing will learn from the experiences of the previous hosts so as to provide high-quality service for the media.
Jiang extended invitation to all media organizations within and outside China to visit Beijing to cover the city’s preparation for the Olympic Games. He said the media’s work will not only help promote the image of Beijing and the idea of “New Beijing, Great Olympics,” but also improve the mutual understanding between the Chinese people and the rest of the world.
The Beijing Olympic Media Center is under the joint sponsorship of BOCOG Media and Communications Department and the Press Office of the Beijing Municipal Government. The Media Center will mainly perform four functions: First, offering comprehensive services for all journalists reporting Olympic-related news; Second, providing a venue for the BOCOG and Beijing Municipal Government to release information about the Beijng Olympic Games, holding news briefings and press conferences on a regular basis; Third, serving as window for international media to obtain information about “New Beijing, Great Olympics”, offering publicity materials from the BOCOG, the Beijing Municipal Government and other relevant organizations; Fourth, organizing various social and cultural events to enhance communications, exchanges and cooperation between Chinese and international media.
