Green Olympic Project
To materialize the concept of Green Olympics in line with the idea of sustainable development, BOCOG entrusted some experts to formulate the Environmental Guidelines for Olympic Construction Projects and the Green Construction Guidelines for Olympic Projects for the purpose of minimizing the negative influence of Olympic venues construction and relevant construction projects on environment.
Environmental Guidelines for Olympic Construction Projects
This Guidelines covers the aspects of architectural energy saving, environmentfriendly building materials, water resource protection and gardening and greening, which put forward the basic environmental requirements for Olympic venue construction projects. In addition to the strict compliance with the state and local applicable regulations in the planning and designing process, it is also required to observe the environmental requirements raised in the Guidelines.
The requirements were also incorporated in the document of Designing Guidelines for Olympic Projects and the ownership tender documents of the Olympic projects, which were distributed to all venue owners and designers for their implementation. Meanwhile, BOCOG Environmental Activities Department reviewed the environmental part of all schemes submitted by bidders, laying a solid foundation for the environmental protection and realization of the concept of "Green Olympics" in the follow-up designing.
Green Construction Guidelines for Olympic Projects
This Guidelines sets specific environmental requirements for the venue construction work from the perspective of construction management and technologies, etc. At the construction sites of the 4 Olympic venues, the construction of which started at the end of December 2003, effective measures were taken to control dust and to protect the environment, where open grounds were fully covered, rules and regulations on environment protection at construction site implemented, and some relevant environmental measures were also applied in the living areas of the construction workers.
Environmental highlights of Olympic Projects
BOCOG Environmental Activities Department plays an important role in proactively pushing the contractors and designers to incorporate the idea of sustainable development into the designing principle and the technological strategy through their review of the designing schemes, preliminary designs and detailed designs for Olympic venues.
The environmental concept embodied in the designing of the National Stadium:
(1) Advanced Energy Saving Design
The spectators stand and several other parts of the National Stadium will fully utilize natural ventilation and lighting in stead of mechanical and artificial means so as to minimize energy consumption and optimize insulation in order to upgrade the overall energy efficiency of the venue.
(2) Optimized water supply, ventilation and air-conditioning systems
Clean energy and recyclable resources will be used in certain parts of the National Stadium. A direct digital control (DDC) system will be adopted to adjust and measure energy supply and optimize heat reclaim from ventilation. In addition, a highly efficient and environment friendly frequency conversion heating, air conditioning and ventilation system will be used to ensure 100% new air operation mode and regional adjustment when needed.
(3) Optimized utilization of water resources
Rain water and high-quality recycled water will be fully utilized. The discharge of sewage will be reduced to the minimum. Dripping irrigation or micro-irrigation devices will be applied in landscaping projects. Humidity probes will be put underneath the lawns of the Stadium to ensure the effective use of water.
(4) Use of clean energy
Photovoltaic lighting system will be another application extensively used for the lighting in outdoor areas. Heating and ventilation and firefighting systems in the Stadium will be environment-friendly, free from fluorine medium in addition to other proactive measures to protect the ozone layer.
(5) Using nvironment-friendly construction materials and Maximizing waste recycling
All construction and decoration materials and finished products used will be energy saving and environment friendly. Adequate devices for gathering and processing solid wastes will be set up in the Stadium so as to achieve an optimized level of waste recycling.
Olympic Forest Park
As we planned, the Olympic Forest Park will be a green ecological zone between the urban and surrounding areas of Beijing, which will help improve the environment and climate of the city and provide the people with a place for their leisure time. It will be an environmental legacy for Beijing.
The designs for the Olympic Forest Park and the Central Zone were evaluated and selected in 2003, with 3 excellent schemes identified. Following the concept of "Green Olympics", all bidding schemes emphasized the systematic design of the natural ecology and displayed a high level in the designs characterized with environmental protection and sustainable development.
